Every time I visit Fleming House, I see success stories. Women who have reclaimed their lives in a good and healthy way. In looking into their faces, there is no way to know what they had to go through to get to where they are as they prepare to leave the yellow house that love built in Columbiana County. Jefferson County has its success stories, as well.

There is an epidemic we don’t hear much about. There is just no denying that aging has its issues. But for some older adults, things become even more complicated. This issue is substance use disorder (SUD) which often is unintentional, often misdiagnosed and untreated because some of the symptoms mock signs of conditions associated with aging.

Home for the holidays: Be safe

It’s that time again, with many festivities planned over the next month or so. Highway safety campaigns also are under way to keep folks safe between parties. Those who abstain from substance use/misuse are making their plans. Christmas parties are scheduled. There will be parades and sitting on Santa’s knee to whisper in his ear what each child hopes to find under the Christmas tree this year.

The Golden Years. These are supposed to be full of wonder, adventure, less stress than during the child-rearing years. These are supposed to be the years of doing all of the things you couldn’t do when you were raising children: had a job, obligations and responsibilities. (Frankly, I think the best years of our lives are when our children are growing up under our roof, safely tucked in at night after the door is locked.)
